Fifteen National Meteorological Services (NMSs) in the region including Tokelau will benefit from the new climateoutlook bulletin generated by The Republic of Korea-Pacific Islands Climate Prediction Services project (ROK-PI CliPS). The bulletin is generated by the Climate Prediction team of the PacMetDesk as part of its support to the NMSs. The bulletin consists of dynamical model information available in the online Climate Prediction Tool called the CLImateToolKIT for the Pacific (or CLIK℗ http://clikp.sprep.org/).
The new climate bulletin is designed specifically for the NMSs to provide them with dynamical model information so that they are able to tailor their own national and village specific climate information to service the needs of local communities and users. The bulletin is also a contribution to the Pacific Islands Regional Climate Center Network (RA V PI RCC) supported by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The bulletin includes forecast information for both rainfall and temperature; out to the next three months. It also provides an assessment of at least 9 dynamical models provided by WMO Global Producing Centers (GPCs) such as International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), National Centers for Environment Prediction (NCEP), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) ClimateCenter(APCC), Australian Bureau of Meteorology (POAMA), Chinese Weather Bureau (CWB), Pusan National University (PNU), Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) and Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC). It is this time of year which is known as the transition period from wet season to dry season that the skill levels of statistical-based models drop where the dynamical models perform better with higher confidence.
The bulletin will help enhance the capacity of NMSs to develop their own national products using the online climateprediction tool CLIKP. The ROK-PI CliPS project is jointly implemented by the APEC Climate Center (APCC) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and is funded through the ROK-PIF Cooperation Fund administered through the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS).
